SEA SALT (SODIUM CHLORIDE)

We use the highest quality food grade Pacific sea salt from the California coast. Sea salt helps soften the skin while cleansing, and detoxifying. Sea salt also supports minor aches and pains, promotes circulation, calms irritation, and is especially beneficial for dry and/or itchy skin.

ORGANIC CANE SUGAR (SACCCHARUM OFFICINARUM)

Can sugar is wonderfully exfoliating and contains natural alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid which help slough off dead skin cells and increase cell turnover, leaving you with smooth, soft and glowing skin.

ORGANIC GOLDEN JOJOBA OIL (SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS)

Jojoba is a perennial and drought resistant desert bush whose seeds produce what we call jojoba oil (it's actually not an oil, but a liquid wax). Because it's a wax it has a very long shelf life and also isn't greasy. The jojoba bush thrives in arid climates and is native to California, Arizona, and Northern Mexico. The name "jojoba" comes  from the word "Hohowi," a name given to the seeds by the O'odham, a Native American tribe that discovered the many uses of the plant. Jojoba oil is very similar to our skin's own sebum and therefore provides true nutrients that keeps the skin supple and soft throughout the day. Jojoba has anti-inflammatory properties, is antibacterial, can work to clear up acne by helping to regulate sebaceous gland activity, sooth sunburned skin, and provide healing support for skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

UNREFINED ORGANIC & FAIR TRADE SHEA BUTTER (BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII)

Shea butter is made from the fruit of the African Karite tree, meaning Tree of Life. It’s buttery, light, healing, vitamin-rich, non-comedogenic (won't clog pores), nourishing, rejuvenating, non-greasy, and has a subtle yummy nutty smell. Shea butter is also rich in fatty acids, soft, and super emollient - we think it’s the ultimate protection for skin! Our organic and fair trade shea butter comes from Northern Ghana and is handmade by women using traditional methods.

ORGANIC CASTOR OIL (RICINIS COMMUNIS)

Our castor oil is extracted from the seeds (beans) of the castor plant and has been used for thousands of years (think Ancient Egypt) for its variety of health benefits. We use castor seed oil for its lymphatic and skin supportive properties. Castor seed oil stimulates lymphatic circulation and drainage, is anti-inflammatory, and supports puffy skin. The fatty acids in castor oil help restore hydration and support the disappearance of blemishes and scars.

ORGANIC SUNFLOWER SEED OIL (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS)

Sunflower oil contains linoleic acid (omega 6) and oleic acid (omega 9). Both of these fatty acids hydrate the skin and support its natural barrier function. Sunflower oil also contains E, an antioxidant that helps inhibit oxidation while healing, soothing, and moisturizing the skin. Sunflower oil is non-greasy, and easily absorbed by the skin, making it the perfect ingredient in our body scrub.

ORGANIC BLACK SEED OIL (NIGELLA SATIVA)

Black seed oil, also known as black cumin seed oil comes from the seeds of a small plant with blue, white or purple flowers that are native to Cyrpus, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Bulgaria and Romania and has been used medicinally and topically for thousands of years. Our cold-pressed organic black seed oil contains high levels of thymoquinone, an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that is supportive skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne and is incredibly moisturizing and can support wound healing by increasing collagen formation.

NON-GMO VITAMIN E (TOCOPHEROL)

We use non-GMO vitamin E derived from sunflowers instead of from genetically modified soy. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radical damage and environmental stress. Vitamin E has anti- inflammatory properties and delivers nutrients to the skin to help moisturize, soothe and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Its antioxidant activity helps prolong the shelf life of the other oils in our scrubs.

COLLOIDAL OAT NON-GMO (AVENA SATIVA)

Colloidal oats (finely ground) have a long history of use for supporting dry, irritated and inflamed or itchy skin. The soothing property of the oat supports a myriad of skin-related issues. Oats contain saponins, a compound with natural cleansing abilities. Saponins combined with naturally occurring zinc in oats are supportive for congested and breakout prone skin, helping to unclog pores, calm and heal. Oats also contain polysaccharides which have humectant-like properties, binding to the acid mantel of the skin to further create a protective barrier. Carbohydrates and proteins in the oat help to moisturize while lipids and flavonoids have antioxidant capability. The colloidal oats milk soak easily dissolve in the water and permeate the whole body, soothing dry skin and gently exfoliating to remove dead skin cells, nourish dry skin and help to restore pH. Clinical studies have shown the effectiveness of colloidal oats in supporting skin conditions such as dry skin, eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

ETHICALLY FORAGED PALO SANTO (BURSEA GRAVEOLENS) ESSENTIAL OIL

Our palo santo essential oil is distilled from the wood of the palo santo tree (bursea graveolens) which is native to the dry tropical forests of Ecuador. Not to be confused with bulnesia sarmientoi (also called "palo santo") which is globally endangered and grows in in Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina and whose wood resembles mahogany and is used to make furniture and other wood products. We do not use this.

Palo santo has a beautiful and complex scent profile with notes of citrus, mint, fennel and pine. The naturally occurring high amounts of the monoterpene, Limonene in palo santo support a healthy inflammatory response and soothe dry and flaky skin. Palo santo means "holy wood" and has many traditional and sacred uses in Ecuador and is still used by Shamans in the Andes and throughout the country; however, its most common use in Ecuador is in households to ward off mosquitos and other insects. It it also used for its healing abilities and to cleanse and purify spaces. Learn more.

LACTOBACILLUS FERMENT (BROAD SPECTRUM PRESERVATIVE MADE FROM THE FERMENTATION OF RADISH)

Lactobacillus is a genus of bacteria that is involved in the fermentation of foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi. Like many members of the lactic acid bacteria family, Lactobacillus can restrict the growth of other microorganisms by acidifying its environment. However, Lactobacillus also produces novel antimicrobial peptides, known as bacteriocins, that are capable of providing broad-spectrum antimicrobial protection, restricting the growth of other microorganisms by acidifying their environment. While our scrub does not contain any water and does not require a broad spectrum preservative, in the event that water does enter the jar while showering, the addition of lactobacillus ferment is there to prevent any bacterial growth. Lactobacillus ferment is a vegan and chemical-free preservative.
