Whipped Deodorant Ingredients

ORGANIC ARROWROOT POWDER (MANIHOT ESCULENTA)

Arrowroot powder has many properties that benefit the skin and make it an essential ingredient in our deodorants. Arrowroot is lightly drying and absorbent, and it provides a soft feel and texture. When you apply your deodorant, your pits feel amazing, and your fingers aren't greasy. 

MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE

Magnesium is found in abundance in the body and can be purchased as a dietary supplement because it's vital for our overall health and wellbeing. Our immune, cardiovascular, and nervous systems all need magnesium to function normally. Magnesium hydroxide is a form of magnesium, combined as an ionic salt with hydroxide. We use magnesium hydroxide in our deodorant because it helps absorb wetness, neutralize and reduce odor causing bacteria in our armpits due to its antibacterial properties. Our magnesium hydroxide is made in the United States in a GMP and NSF registered facility. It is third party tested by accredited labs to ensure its identity, purity, and potency. 

BAKING SODA (SODIUM BICARBONATE)

Sodium Bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline but often appears as a white powder and is extremely versatile. Composed of sodium and bicarbonate ions, baking soda is slightly salty and alkaline and works as an antibacterial and odor absorbing/neutralizing agent in our deodorant. Our baking soda is extracted in the USA with a simple water process that's totally chemical-free! While some experience irritation with baking soda, it does work incredibly well with many people's body chemistry (including ours)! If baking soda is not your jam, we offer our whipped deodorant with magnesium instead. 

ORGANIC SUNFLOWER OIL (HELIANTHUS ANNUUS)

Our sunflower oil is extracted from the seeds of organic sunflowers. Sunflower oil contains linoleic acid (omega 6) and oleic acid (omega 9), and both of these fatty acids hydrate the skin and support its natural barrier function. Sunflower oil also contains Vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps inhibit oxidation while healing, soothing, and moisturizing the skin. Sunflower oil is non-greasy, and and easily absorbed by the skin, making it the perfect ingredient in our deodorant. 

UNREFINED ORGANIC & FAIR TRADE SHEA BUTTER (BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII)

Shea butter is made from the fruit of the African Karite tree, meaning Tree of Life. It’s buttery, light, healing, vitamin-rich, non-comedogenic (won't clog pores), nourishing, rejuvenating, non-greasy, and has a subtle yummy nutty smell. Shea butter is also rich in fatty acids, soft, and super emollient - we think it’s the ultimate protection for skin! Our organic and fair trade shea butter comes from Northern Ghana and is handmade by women using traditional methods. 

NON-GMO VITAMIN E (TOCOPHEROL)

We use non-GMO vitamin E derived from sunflowers in our deodorants. Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radical damage and environmental stress. Vitamin E has anti- inflammatory properties and delivers nutrients to the skin to help moisturize and soothe. 

WILDHARVESTED CANDELILLA WAX (UPHORBIA CERIFERA)

Our candelilla wax comes from the leaves of a small desert shrub native to Northern Mexico and the American Southwest. Our candelilla wax is pesticide-free and harvested from its natural or “wild” habitat; there is currently not an organic option on the market. We use candelilla wax because it’s an excellent vegan alternative to beeswax and more environmentally friendly than palm or carnuba wax. Candelilla wax is soothing and conditioning, and it helps keep our deodorant's consistency stable.

ORGANIC SWEET ORANGE ESSENTIAL OIL (CITRUS SINENSIS)

Our sweet orange essential oil (EO) is extracted using the cold-pressed method. Native to China and India, the United States is now one of the world's largest producers of the fruit. Historically, oranges symbolize generosity, prosperity, and happiness, which makes sense considering that orange essential oil has an uplifting, brightening, fruity and sweet aroma. Sweet orange EO can improve circulation, is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antibacterial. It is also a disinfectant and stimulant (lymphatic).

ORGANIC SWEET LIME ESSENTIAL OIL (CITRUS AURANTIFOLIA)

Our lime essential oil (EO) is extracted from the fruit using the steam distillation method. Limes are native to India and southeast Asia, and when introduced to the Americas became a favorite fruit both for its taste and therapeutic properties. Lime EO is refreshing, uplifting and stimulating with a citrusy, zesty, and slightly sweet aroma. Lime EO is deodorizing, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, has restorative properties and can help calm excessive perspiration. Steam distilled Lime essential oil is not phototoxic and is primarily composed of terpenes.

Active Constituents: Terpenes: limonene, gamma and alpha terpineol

ORGANIC BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL (CITRUS BERGAMIA) 

Our bergamot essential oil (EO) is extracted from the fruit using the cold expression method. The Bergamot citrus tree is named after the small town of Bergamo in Northern Italy where it was discovered and cultivated; however, some say it's actually native to India and called "The King of Pears" because of its shape. Bergamot is an extremely versatile essential oil. It's relaxing, calming, uplifting and has a delightfully citrusy, fresh, woodsy, and slightly floral scent with spicy undertones. Bergamot EO is antiseptic, antitoxic, and has deodorizing properties. It is also an analgesic (pain reliever).

ORGANIC SPEARMINT ESSENTIAL OIL (MENTHA SPICATA)

Our spearmint essential oil (EO) is extracted using the steam distillation method. Spearmint is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region, but now widely cultivated in the United States, where it is often used to flavor food. The Ancient Greeks used spearmint EO as a restorative and applied it topically to alleviate nausea, indigestion, and headaches. Spearmint has a sweet minty and fresh fragrance, and  is antiseptic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, deodorizing and supportive for congestive skin and dermatitis. 

ORGANIC TEA TREE ESSENTIAL OIL (MELALEUCA ALTERNIFOLIA) 

Our tea tree essential oil (EO) is extracted using the steam or water distillation method. Native to Australia, tea tree EO has been used by the Aboriginal people for centuries. Tea tree is our go to, and we always take it with us when we travel for first aid purposes. Tea Tree EO is incredibly cleansing, cooling, stimulating, energizing and has a fresh woodsy and spicy aroma. Tea tree EO is anti-inflammatory, fungicidal, anti-viral, bactericidal, anti-infectious, and has immuno-stimulent properties.

ORGANIC GRAPEFRUIT ESSENTIAL OIL (CITRUS PARADISI) 

Our grapefruit essential oil (EO) is extracted using the cold expression method. Native to Asia and largely cultivated in California, Florida, Brazil and Israel, grapefruit is a sweet botanical surprise, a hybrid of the Pomelo (citrus maxima) and the Orange (citrus sinensis). Grapefruit has a fresh and subtle citrus aroma that envelopes the senses and is wonderfully balancing, cleansing, and uplifting. We use grapefruit EO in our deodorant because it has stimulating (lymphatic) properties, helps to increase blood circulation, and is detoxifying. Grapefruit EO is antiseptic, astringent, antibacterial, anti-toxic, and helps tone the skin and tissues. 

ORGANIC JUNIPER  ESSENTIAL OIL (JUNIPERUS COMMUNIS) 

Our juniper essential oil (EO) is extracted using the steam distillation method. Juniper is an evergreen shrub native to North America, Europe and Asia and produces seed cones known as juniper berries. Juniper berries were among the first aromatics used in ancient civilization. The Ancient Greeks burned Juniper during epidemics, while the Ancient Egyptians anointed the dead and used the oil in perfumes. Many cultures across the world revere Juniper and use it today for purification in incense. Native Americans burn it during cleansing ceremonies. Juniper is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, stimulating (lymphatic), relieves nervous tension, disinfects, and is calming and restoring. 

ORGANIC CEDARWOOD  ESSENTIAL OIL (JUNIPERUS VIRGINIANA) 

Our wild harvested cedarwood essential oil (EO) is extracted using the steam distillation method. Native to North America, Cedarwood (also called Red Cedar) is honored and used by Native Americans for its healing and purification properties as well as to combat respiratory infections, to relieve nervous tension and skin rashes. Cedarwood has a mild and sweet woodsy, camphoraceous, balsamic scent and is incredibly grounding, calming and revitalizing. We are humbled to use this sacred tree oil in or deodorant.

ORGANIC GERANIUM ESSENTIAL OIL (PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS) 

Geranium is a perennial shrub that grows about 5’ tall and the essential oil is made by through steam distillation using the flower. Geranium, also called ‘rose geranium’ has a sweet, fruity, floral and rose-like scent and is known for its regulating quality. Therapeutically, geranium is an astringent, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and supports the lymphatic system by supporting detoxification.

ORGANIC LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL (CITRUS LIMON) 

The lemon comes from a small evergreen tree (a hybrid of wild plants) and its exact origin is unknown. Some say the lemon tree is from East India. Our lemon essential oil is cold pressed from the peel and its wonderfully cleansing, clarifying, and cheering. Therapeutically, the lemon is anti-septic, anti-bacterial, and supports oily or dull skin.

ORGANIC YLANG YLANG ESSENTIAL OIL (CANANGA ODORATA) 

Ylang Ylang essential oil, also called Flower of Flowers and Kenanga is made from the steam distillation of the fragrant yellow/greenish. Ylang Ylang grows in the temperate climates of Philippines and Indonesia and has a long history of use in perfumery with its floral, heady, sweet, fruity and spicy fragrance. Ylang ylang is euphoric and and also eases feeling of anxiety, panic, shock, and fear. Ylang Ylang contains linalool, a terpene that has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

A note on essential oils: Essential oils are powerfully concentrated and for external use only. Essential oils have many therapeutic uses, need to be diluted, and always used safely. Our deodorants contain a <1% dilution of essential oils in their overall formulas, which is well below the safe range for a healthy adult (2%). We chose to use less essential oils in our deodorants because they are powerful and can cause sensitization in larger concentrations over long term exposure (in some individuals).
